365 Day Blog Post Challenge 2019
209. What do you love about your job? Hate?
This is an appropriate prompt to have come up today. I am currently having a love/hate relationship with my job, so the timing is perfect.
Things I love about my job? First I want to preference that I don’t really know if there is anything I “love” about my job. “Like”… yes, but “love”… probably not. I was not one of those fortunate people that was lucky enough to do something I was passionate about. I have known and heard of people that really enjoy going to work and really do “love” what they do. You know those people that say that their job does not feel like a job because they enjoy it so much? I’ll be totally honest. That is NOT me. With that being said, I am very grateful for the job I have. I feel fortunate to work for the company I work and for everything this particular company has provided me over the past 13 years.
The things I like about my job include the fact that this job allowed me to go to school and obtain my college degree. I would have never been able to afford paying 100% of my schooling. Having the company cover 75% of the cost of tuition and books made it possible for me to accomplish one of the biggest achievements thus far in my life.
It may sound silly but another positive about my job is that I get to work a 9/80 schedule. We work 80 hours in 9 days and get every other Friday off. Even though I’m still working the same amount of hours in a two week period, having that one Friday every two weeks were I get to send Don off to work and have a day all to myself is priceless. For the most part, I guess I will say that I enjoy the work that I do. I get to gather data and work with lots of paperwork. Not for everyone, but I’ve always been a big paperwork kind of gal. Then there are the people. This is sort of where the love/hate relationship is coming from recently. I would like to say that for the most part I enjoy the people I work with, but sadly there are just a handful of people that I trust and feel comfortable being friendly with. Trying to focus on the positive, I do my best to only associate with those people and keep the other people at arms length with limited to no communication. Only when absolutely necessary. I will give my job some love for the fact that they did send me to France to work for a month in 2018. I think most people would agree that is a reason in itself to like your job. If I had to pick the thing I liked most about my job, it would be that there is little micro-managing. I get to work pretty independently and I really enjoy that.
Hate? Well, Recently I’ve felt there are more and more coworkers doing things to challenge me in my job and that makes for a very unpleasant work environment. The mere fact that I have to get up every morning and go to work is bad enough. It is frustrating and depressing that there has to be people that you work with that are determined to make the day more difficult. I try so hard to keep a positive attitude (or to at least display a positive attitude even if I don’t feel it inside), but recently these people are making it a challenge to even fake my positivity. On another note, I will give a strong hate to the fact that in my position, I occasionally have to give presentations or speak to groups. I do NOT like public speaking in any format, so when I am called upon to have to present or speak, these are times I really dislike my job. The other thing that is not something that I necessarily hate about my job, but is something I would change if I could would be the ability to work from home. I am much more productive when on my own without distractions (and I find I do better work in my pajamas). I’ve suggested the idea of being able to work from home one day a week but it was declined. That was a big disappointment.
Over all, work is work and I am both grateful and fortunate to have the job I have. It’s by no means my dream job, but it has it’s positives.
